When it rains, it really rains — and because you’re a graduate student who gets up at 7:00 a.m. and hauls her ass to school on a bike, you didn’t know that the heavens would open at 9:15. Naturally, all the undergrads who live within walking distance of campus glanced at their windows when they opened their precious teenaged eyes at 9:55 and lunged for their wellies and ‘brellies. So now, as you squelch shivering through Cal’s main academic building clutching a rain-spattered copy of Infinite Jest like a drowning rat wildly defending her unwieldy young, all the little brats stare at you. You’re already berating yourself internally for wearing leather boots and a leather jacket, bothering to fix your hair just so at the gym, and spending those extra thirty seconds getting your mascara just right when one, her perfectly blow-dried hair gleaming under the fluorescent lights, turns to the boy next to her and says, “Well, Jesus — I’m sure as hell not walking to the library if it’s raining that hard.”

…the library, of course, being exactly where you’re going.

The President wasn’t speaking exclusively about Caribbean immigrants, but given that more Dominicans and Puerto Ricans now live in the United States than in the DR or in PR, he couldn’t have been more right.
